Helping Gaza

I have been unable to find the right words to describe my anger and sorrow at Israel's cold blooded assault on the people of Gaza and the equally cold-blooded response of most of the worlds' governments. But the most outrageous response, or lack thereof is that of Egypt's cowardly Mubarak who does not have the balls to unilaterally open the Rafah crossing to help save Palestinian lives. Individually, there is little I can do to stem the violence, but rather than fuming helplessly about the injustice of it all, I can help fund charities whose assistance the people of Gaza will sorely need long after the violence stops. The list below is of excellent charities that provide help to Palestinians.

I have just donated to three of these charities and challenge anyone reading this post to do what they can to help. Also, disseminate the above links to friends and let me know in the comment section if you donated.

Sandmonkey,

Nice to know that your moral compass has not budged at the carnage in Gaza. I wonder if the 40 some civilians killed at a UN school today will change your mind (probably not). All your Predisent for life has to do is open that fucking Rafah crossing to help with humanitarian aid; is that too much to ask? And yes, you are right, he is no worse than any of the other blowhards who pass as leaders in our blighted region.

Hamas has said that the Israeli invasion is the path to a Hamas victory, so what exactly are you complaining about?

I seemed to have touched a raw nerve among some Egyptians who are reading way too much in what I said.

Abu Zatar,

If you can't be civil, go somewhere else. Where, may I ask did you note levantine loathing of Egypt in anything I said?

My dear friend,
You have certainly touched a raw nerve, and irritated those people with a guilty conscience!..
For what it's worth, I agree with you entirely..
I, too, feel helpless and impotent.. I have donated to a number of these and similar charities, and hoping to make more group donations after a gathering I am organizing over the weekend..
I have written letters to Members of Parliament, Government Ministers, and local newspapers.. I have signed petitions, on-line and in town centres.. but still feel as helpless and impotent as when I started..
The positions of the so-called Arab leaders is shameful, and none is more shameful than that of the cowardly Mubarak...
Thank you for making a valiant and honourable stand..

On the other hand, I, personally, do not hate Egypt or Egyptians.. well, except one or two, perhaps....

SB,

Good to hear from you my friend and thank you for your support.

Abu Zatar,
I warned you. Please take you obscene rant somewhere else.

Dear Abu Kareem, thank you very much for posting this and allah ya3teek al 3afieh for your contribution. and you’re right, contributing to the much needed humanitarian aid is the least thing we could do. And I humbly state that I contributed, within my means, to chairites here in the UAE twice, once in form of tangible items (foodstuff and medical supplies) and another in form of money to an on-the-ground aid organization. Again, the least I could do. And I invite all those ables to please do the same.

Abu Kareem, I once read that empathy is a feeling that has a neurological basis, and when I looked at wikipedia again today, it pretty much stated the same thing:

These studies have shown that observing another person’s emotional state activates parts of the neuronal network involved in processing that same state in oneself, whether it is disgust, touch, or pain.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empathy#Neurological_basis

And I underscore the word 'pain' here ten times.

Given the above, wouldn’t it be safe to assume that those who are incapable of feeling epathy are mentally disordered?

DJ,

Thank you for your support and kind words. As to your point that "those who are incapable of feeling epathy are mentally disordered", if fully agree. But of course there is "nurture" in addition to "nature" thaf inluence our behavior. I am always shocked by how quickly people who espouse an ideologuical stance lose their humanity and their ability to empathize.

I agree, what is happening is wrong and cruel and no one deserves to feel the wrath of this intense hate. So many are dying and what if it was you? What if those children were yours-their future stolen. This is inhumane and needs to stop. Why are we allowing it to happen-for the fear of what will happen to us? It's time that someone put an end to this, I cannot watch this massacre any longer, it has to change!
